About Dermal Fillers Melbourne
As skin ages, it gradually loses collagen, elastin and fat. Lines and wrinkles and volume deficiencies begin to appear. Strategically placed dermal fillers take the place of lost fat pads and collagen. Some even promote the production of collagen. This helps to enhance areas, such as the lips or cheeks, by adding volume in a controlled way. Dermal fillers can also be used to sculpt and change the appearance of facial features. Versatile in use, dermal fillers can address various signs of ageing on the face and body.
Lip augmentation – Plumping up naturally thin or aged lips is the most common use of dermal fillers.
Filling static, deep lines around the lips, the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth (nasolabial lines), smile lines, marionette lines and crow’s feet. Note, fillers are used on static lines which, unlike dynamic lines, remain visible on the face even when it’s relaxed and expressionless. Dynamic lines are best treated with Anti-Wrinkle Injections.
- Adding volume to sunken cheeks, weak chins, hollow eyes and deep tear troughs.
- Non-surgical rhinoplasty
- Filling deep acne scars
- Rejuvenating ageing hands and necks
Unlike surgical facial rejuvenation procedures like facelift and eyelid surgery, dermal fillers can be administered in a quick and easy in-clinic procedure. They also don’t require incisions or anaesthesia, and therefore have few associated risks.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is the most common type of filler and is made from a substance that can be found naturally in the body. Most hyaluronic acid fillers are also infused with the numbing agent lidocaine which helps minimise the discomfort caused by the injection procedure as well as reducing pain afterward. What’s more, the hyaluronic acid attracts and draws in water from the air which keeps skin moisturised.
One of the benefits of dermal fillers is the fact that there is no waiting time for a result. From the moment that a person has the procedure performed they will witness immediate benefits. There are products available which can dissolve fillers, so the effects of dermal fillers are not only temporary, but they can be reversed if necessary.
In order to achieve facial harmonisation, an initial consultation is required before the dermal filler injections and before any skin treatments (including skin peels) are performed. This will ensure you look refined, refreshed and natural. Smaller quantities in more areas is a better approach than larger filler volumes in fewer areas.
How long do dermal fillers last? On average dermal fillers may last from 6 – 18 months (please note, it is not the same for other cosmetic injectable treatment).

The Treatment
What do dermal fillers treat?
Dermal fillers treat various lines and folds of the face including chin lines and dimpling crow’s feet around the eyes; forehead lines; frown lines; marionette lines (between the lips and the chin); and nasolabial folds (between the nose and the lips). They can also be used for a brow lift; cheek filler enhancement; chin reshaping; jawline straightening; to reduce jowls; for lip enhancement; and to treat temple hollows and tired eyes.
How much dermal filler should I have?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. While it is common practice to inject 1mL of filler into each part of the face (e.g., lips), often we advise using 1mL of filler for multiple areas on the face rather than just one area. This allows for a more balanced approach to filling the face. With careful pavement, it is possible to use smaller amounts to achieve better results without overfilling the face
What is it like getting dermal fillers?
During your initial consultation, your practitioner will discuss your skin concerns, look at how your face moves and your natural facial expressions to assess which treatment options are right for you. They will then inject the filler below the skin with a needle or a catheter depending on the area and results desired. Some patients experience some bruising or swelling straight after the procedure, but it typically subsides after a couple of days. The length of time that results will stay visible depends on a few factors including where the filler is injected, which product is used, and your own metabolism.
Are there any side effects?
Your practitioner will explain any potential side effects specific to the injection site, but in general, dermal fillers are safe and effective. There are some more severe, but rare, side effects including allergic reactions and infection. There is also potential for fillers to leave an asymmetrical result, but if they are injected by an experienced board-certified doctor or registered nurse, the risks are minimal. Overall, fillers are a popular and effective way to preserve a youthful appearance.
Is there anything I should avoid before getting dermal fillers?
In the week leading up to your appointment, you should avoid taking ibuprofen and aspirin (you can take paracetamol if needed), vitamin E and fish oil supplements as they can exacerbate bruising and bleeding.
Is it safe to get dermal filler treatment while breastfeeding?
Many women are curious to know if they can undergo cosmetic treatments while they are breastfeeding. Most cosmetic procedures do not pose a significant risk to being absorbed into the mother’s milk or affecting lactation. Dermal filler procedures are safe to have when breastfeeding, if you are physically well with no symptoms of mastitis or any other infection/illness. You are required to notify your practitioner if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, so we can discuss any potential implications.
Can men have dermal filler treatment?
Dermal filler that is expertly injected can be a powerful tool to rejuvenate without surgery. When it comes to filler, the under eye hollow (tear trough) is a popular place for men to treat. Everyone – men and women – lose volume as we age, but the heavier quality of the skin of men and the bone structure of the face in this area make volume loss more obvious. A small amount of filler can help to eliminate the shadows and make men look better rested. In addition, men are seeking to define their chin and jawline, soften nasolabial folds, and address volume loss in the lower cheeks. At Elucell, our goal is to help you appear refreshed, not flawless.
