What are under-eye wrinkles?
Under eye wrinkles refer to textural and structural changes below the lower eyelid resulting from decreased collagen production, elastin degeneration and alterations in dermal extracellular matrix. These changes reduce dermal support and resilience, making dynamic expression lines more visible over time. As hydration decreases, the stratum corneum becomes less able to retain moisture, contributing further to creasing.
Reasons include:
1. thinner skin around the eye with lower dermal density
2. photo-ageing related to ultraviolet exposure
3. as we age naturally, our skin slowly makes less of the collagen (especially types I and III) that keeps it firm and smooth.
4. repetitive muscular contraction (orbicularis oculi)
